What are the different types of Google Ads

Chances are you’ve clicked on a Google Ad before.

Google Ads is a paid advertising platform that uses a pay-per-click model (PPC), which means the advertiser pays each time someone clicks on their ad. Businesses and organisations of all sizes use it to drive traffic, boost conversions and reach people who are searching the web for a particular product or service.

One of the best things about Google Ads is how flexible it is. You can create all sorts of ads and deliver them to the right audience on both mobile and desktop. Your ad appears on the search engine results page (SERP) whenever someone searches for one of your keywords on Google Search or Maps. So let’s take a look at the different types of Google Ads you can use!

Search Network Ads

The Google Search Network is a group of search-related websites and apps where your ads can appear. When someone searches for terms linked to one of your keywords, your ad can show up above or below the organic search results. The main types of Search Network ads include:

  • Text ads, Dynamic Search Ads and call-only ads – These are the most common ads on the Search Network. They usually carry an “Ad” or “Ads” label on the search results page, and may show an “Ads by Google” label on partner sites. They can also include ad extensions, which let advertisers add business details like a location or phone number.
  • Shopping ads – Shopping ads show products for sale in a visual format and link straight to them. They’re labelled “Sponsored” or “Ad” on the search results page and may show an “Ads by Google” label on partner sites. Unlike text ads, they include product images, a title, price, store name and more.
  • Image and video ads – These let search partners show images and videos. For video campaigns, Google offers many different video ad formats such as in-stream ads, out-stream ads, video discovery ads and bumper ads.

Display Ads

With visually striking ad formats, the Google Display Network lets you reach users while they browse websites, share a YouTube video with a friend, check their Gmail or use mobile apps. You can also drive more conversions with automated retargeting, which re-engages people who visited your site but didn’t buy. Here are the different Display ad types:

  • Responsive Display ads – These ads are asset-based, so Google can automatically adjust their size, appearance and format to fit the available ad space. You provide logos, headlines, images, videos and descriptions, and Google optimises them for the best performance. Because Responsive Display Ads show up as “native” ads, they blend into the look and feel of the publisher’s site.
  • Uploaded image ads – If you want more creative control in your Display Network campaigns, you can create ads outside Google Ads and upload them. You can use images in multiple file types and sizes, or HTML5. You can also make these ads responsive and attach them to a feed for dynamic remarketing.
  • Engagement ads – These are image and video ads launched on YouTube and across the Display Network.
  • Gmail ads – Gmail Ads are interactive, personalised ads that appear in the Promotions and Social tabs of a user’s inbox. When clicked, they either send the user to the advertiser’s landing page or expand like an email. An expanded ad can include website links, app store buttons, images, video or embedded forms.

App Promotion Ads

If you advertise a mobile app, you need to promote it across several platforms and give existing users a reason to make a purchase. Based on your keywords, Google’s app campaigns can streamline the whole process by promoting your app across Google’s biggest properties. These include Google Search, the Google Play store, YouTube, the Google Display Network and other app publishers.

Unlike most Google Ads campaigns, you don’t have to design individual ads for app campaigns. Google builds several ads in dynamic formats by combining your ad text and assets, including those from your app’s store listing. You’ll just need to provide a starting bid and budget, plus the languages and locations for your ads.

Google Ads also automates targeting and bidding, which can help you get the best return on investment from each app download. You can refine your targeting further to find valuable users based on key goals or metrics (KPIs), such as in-app conversions, retention and usage, social engagement and churn rate.
