For a long time, SEO meant one thing: rank on page one of Google, get the click, get the traffic. That model built entire marketing strategies, agency practices, and measurement frameworks. It still matters, but it is no longer the whole game.
The way people search for information, compare options, and build shortlists is changing. AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews are increasingly answering questions directly, without sending people to a list of links. The destination has moved from your website to the AI-generated answer itself.
If your brand is not showing up in those answers, you are missing conversations you cannot even see in your analytics.
What actually changed
The mechanics of search look broadly the same on the surface. People type a question. They get an answer. But the nature of that answer has fundamentally shifted.
Where search used to return ten blue links and let the person decide, AI-powered search now synthesises an answer and cites a source. That citation is your new ranking position, and unlike a traditional search result, if your brand is not cited, you do not just fall to page two. You are absent entirely from that conversation.
This is the problem that makes GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) genuinely new. It is not a rebranding of existing SEO practice. It is a different layer of visibility, with different signals, different content requirements, and a different success metric.
The blind spot in your current reporting
Here is what makes this difficult to act on. When someone searches Google and does not click your result, you can at least see the impression in Search Console. When someone asks ChatGPT about your category and your brand does not appear, you see nothing, not even a missed session or a bounce rate. Just a potential customer who built their shortlist without you on it.
GA4 and keyword rankings are still important, but they measure traffic that arrived. They tell you nothing about the conversations happening in AI tools where your brand was not mentioned. Most reporting frameworks are built to measure what arrives, but they can’t track what never came in the first place.
Practical starting point: Open ChatGPT or Perplexity. Search for the questions your customers ask about your category. Write down who gets cited. If it is not you, that is your baseline. Do ten searches. It will tell you more about your GEO position than a month of rank tracking.
Why topic authority now matters more than keywords
Traditional SEO rewards keyword optimisation: pages built around specific phrases, structured with the right tags, earning links from relevant domains. That still matters. But AI tools do not scan for keyword density. They look for depth, credibility, and comprehensive coverage of a topic.
A brand that has written consistently and expertly about a subject, with real substance and a genuine point of view, gets cited. Thin pages built around keyword phrases get ignored. The content that wins in GEO often already exists inside your business; you just may not have published it yet.
This is an important distinction. GEO does not require you to start over. It requires you to go deeper on what you already know, and to structure that knowledge in a way that AI tools can ascertain and trust.
SEO and GEO are not either/or
One of the most important things to understand about GEO is that it builds on SEO, not against it. Technical site health, quality backlinks, and well-structured content are still prerequisites. They are the foundation, and GEO is the layer you add on top.
The risk is not in investing in SEO. The risk is in investing only in SEO while a new category of search visibility grows without you.
Most brands have not started building for GEO yet. That gap is an opportunity, but it will not stay open indefinitely. The brands building topic authority and structured content now are the ones who will be hardest to displace in AI search results in twelve months.
What this means for your brand right now
Start by understanding where you currently stand in AI-generated answers for your category. That five-minute exercise will make the urgency of GEO clear to you and your business.
From there, the priorities are straightforward: audit your most important pages for depth rather than just keywords, add structured Q&A content that answers real questions directly, and begin building the kind of authoritative presence that AI models learn to trust over time.
OMDIGI runs GEO visibility audits that test your brand across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews, map who is getting cited in your category, and give you a prioritised list of what to fix first.
